Preparing for Exhibition

Students are in the process of putting together an exhibition of the things we have covered in class.  We will show photographs from the Brooklyn neighborhoods and from New Orleans.  We will also screen our two documentaries on the two areas.  Students will have a spoken word session, Q and A and more.  We are planning our first exhibition at The Brooklyn School for Global Studies on Jan. 21-23.  Please stay tuned for more information.

New Orleans Keosha Chance

My trip to New Orleans was fun. I learned a lot of things i never knew, before and about how the levees broke and what happened when the Hurricane occurred. I was happy when i arrive at New Orleans ,because I think its just like were i came from which is Guyana, a country where the government does not care about his people and what happens but i never had a Hurricane in my Country before . I learned alto of things about the people there and what they went thought and now i know not to take life for granted and help as many i can even if its not in your Community it can be in a different Country or State . While in N.O i worked with some amazing kids, i never knew their were people like them in New.Orleans. They have a teacher who's name is Nat Turner who is so amazing he gave up his whole life to come to N.O to help others who are in need, and living on 20 to 30 dollars a month i think it is something so wonderful. I would not be able to do that. In social Justice class we worked on Gentrification and below i will show some images of displacement , new development and Gentrification in New York City. I think the trip to New Orleans was good because I learned a lot of things about Hurricane Katrina and what it did to the 9th Ward. The thing I really liked about Mr. Turner is that he is very dedicated in helping his students and getting the school up and running. I'm looking forward to going back down and helping them out.

P.S. I DO NOT HAVE A TWIN!
My name is Catherine. I didn't attend the trip to New Orleans but it still seemed like I attended it because of all that I heard. I was told more in depth what acually happened to the leaves. I learned that they wanted to flood the 9th Ward to save the more important parts of New Orleans. I think that if I would of had the chance to attend this trip I would have so that I could have the experience that the class had.

Your Presence Has Been Acknowledge ...

Hi Mr . Tuner , Renaldo , Terrance , Shawntrice & Stephanie ...

Greetings ! First and foremost I hope all is well . I pray for all of you and hope that your families are in the best of health ; mentally , physically , and emotionally . I know it's kind of hard for you all still but like my grandmother always say , "If there's a will , there's a way . " I believe Hurricane Katrina was a stepping stone , even after 3 years for all of you to begin change and growth in your own personal lives and communities . I learned a lot from you all and I'm thankful for the knowledge I gained . Mr . Nat Tuner is a wonderful teacher , and you guys are very intelligent . I wish Renaldo , Terrance and Shawntrice was as talkative as Mr . Nat Tuner at the beginning of the education vacation . Advice for the future , talk a little more and do not be afraid to share your thoughts , because believe it or not your very bright individuals . I remember telling Shawtrice , Stephanie & Renaldo about Brooklyn (Bed-Stuy) and how similar it is currently to there neighborhood (The lower ninth ward) . I learned more about the lava's , the different kind of hurricanes , The french quarters , Mr . Nat Tuner school , the students , food , selective residents , the police system , schools and the list can continue . I'm a leave it on a positive note ... continue doing good and do not let anyone stand in front of your American Dream , accomplish your goals no matter what ! I miss all of you guys !
